Astronomical Imagery

Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer.

Hubble Space Telescope (HST) The latest news, images, science and fun and games from our orbiting space telescope.

Hubble Heritage ProjectOut of thousands of HST images in its archives, The Hubble Heritage Team features one each month and presents it to the public along with explanatory information.

Anglo Australian Observatory Located outside the small town of Coonabarabran in northwest NSW, Australia, the AAO operates two optical telescopes at its Siding Spring Observatory. Astrophotographer David Malin has set a new standard in digital astrophotography.

The following amateur astrophotographers have built wonderful sites displaying their marvelous imagery. The beautiful images on these pages demonstrate the degree of quality that can be achieved by non-professionals.

Constellations

Constellations (U of Bonn) Photographic tours of many constellations, organized by month of visibility, are offered at this site. Included in each are deep sky objects within the constellations.

Constellations Pageof the Peoria Astronomical Society A comprehensive site containing mythological information about each constellation, primary stars and deep sky objects.

The Constellations Richard Dibon-Smith has compiled another comprehensive site on the constellations.

Deep Sky Atlas: Constellation List From the Hawaiian Astronomical Society. This site features interactive sky maps of all the major constellations.

General Astronomy Topics and News

Students for the Exploration and Development of Space (SEDS) One of the most complete, and comprehensive web sites available for all aspects of general astronomy and space science. You could literally spend days here absorbing all there is to experience!

Space.Com is a commercial web site dedicated to most everything dealing with the space sciences. It features the latest in astronomy and spaceflight news, a "Space Store" and many fine image galleries.

The Astronomical Society of the Pacific The Society's "Astro Shop" is full of fun, as well as educational, astronomy and space stuff, available for purchase at reasonable prices.

Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) SETI offers individuals a unique opportunity to participate in a collaborative computing effort to identify radio signals from alien civilizations. (No, they haven't found any yet!) Through the use of a screen saver on your home computer, packets of raw radio data are downloaded to your home or work computer and analyzed during times when it is otherwise sitting idle. The analyzed data is then automatically sent back to the SETI scientists for their review.  Wouldn't it be cool to be the lucky participant who discovers E.T.?

Windows to the Universe A very graphics intensive web site oriented towards the general public. Operated by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, it covers numerous aspects of astronomy.

International Dark Sky Association The I.D.S. is a non-profit orginization dedicated to preserving and protecting our dark nighttime skies and fighting "light pollution".

Imagine the Universe (NASA/Goddard Spaceflight Center) For ages 14 and up, it offers (among other things) historical insights to astronomical topics and man's ventures into space.

Heavens Above is a multi-faceted web site dedicated to space exploration and astronomy.

Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL NASA) Home to many of the U.S.'s manned and unmanned space projects. A "jumping-off place" for more detailed information about astronomy and space science.

Views of the Solar System In five languages! A very thorough multimedia site dedicated to our own Solar System.

StarDate Online A very comprehensive guide to astronomy. Includes weekly and monthly observing guide. Produced by the University of Texas McDonald Observatory.

Astronomy Outreach Network The latest in astronomy news, events and imagery.

Molecular Expressions - Powers of 10 A facinating Java Applet in which the visitor can "View the Milky Way at 10 million light years from the Earth. Then move through space towards the Earth in successive orders of magnitude until you reach a tall oak tree just outside the buildings of the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in Tallahassee, Florida. After that, begin to move from the actual size of a leaf into a microscopic world that reveals leaf cell walls, the cell nucleus, chromatin, DNA and finally, into the subatomic universe of electrons and protons".

Observatories and Panetariums

Keck Telescopes (Mauna Kea, Hawaii)

Very Large Telescopes (VLT, Paranal Observatory, Chile) Most of the information of interest to the general public will be found under the "Outreach Activities" heading.
The VLT is operated by the European Southern Observatory (ESO), which also operates the La Silla Observatory.

National Optical Astronomical Observatories (NOAO) operates four major observatories around the world:

Kitt Peak National Observatory near Tucson, Arizona, is the home of several research grade scopes.
Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile operates several optical scopes and one radio telescope.
The National Solar Observatory with facilities at Kitt Peak and Sacramento Peak.
The U. S. Gemini Program, part of an international effort to construct twin 8.1-meter telescopes atop mountains in Hawaii and Chile.

Rose Center For Earth and Space and the Hayedn Planetarium are located in New York City and are part of the American Museum of Natural History.

Clark Planitarium is located in Salt Lake City, Utah. It is currently undergoing a major remodel and upgrade of it's imaging equipment. According to Mike Murray, the planetarium's new Production Manager (and former Montanan), it will soon house "the world's first Digistar 3 theater system – full-dome, full-color high resolution computer animation projection!" Powering the theater system will b a "60-cpu computer render farm to produce computer animation much like “Star Wars” only wrapped around everyone in a dome environment and 13,000 watts of surround sound to boot". Sounds pretty nice to us.
