Its proximity to us explains its broad expanse in the sky, covering an area of over 4 degrees. In the beautiful image at right, the brilliant orange giant star Aldebaran (Alpha Tauri) dominates the view of the cluster although it is not a true cluster member. Aldebaran lies less than half the distance to the cluster (about 60 light years) and is significantly older than the cluster stars. Astrophotographer Mario Cogo captured this stunning image from the clear, dark skies of La Palma, Canary Islands. (Click on the small image to open another browser window with the full resolution image.)

The mythological story behind the Hyades involves the twelve (or fifteen, in some versions) daughters and one son (Hyas) of Atlas and Pleione. As the story goes, Hyas was killed by a lion, or perhaps a wild boar. The daughters were so grieved by his death, that they also perished. Five of the deceased daughters (Phaesyla, Ambrosia, Coronis 1, Eudore 1, and Polyxo 2) were placed in the heavens in the constellation Taurus by the compassionate gods, while the remaining seven were placed nearby and appear now as the Pleiades cluster of stars (see the info window for the Pleiades).

Observing the Hyades requires low magnification because of its breadth in the night sky. Seven- or ten-power binoculars reveal its striking beauty, bringing out the brilliant blues and whites of its young, hot stars.

(Image used with permission.)',
