In the process of changing from hydrogen fusion to helium fusion, the star has puffed out its outer hydrogen atmosphere and, consequently, Aldebaran\'s diameter has increased to 40 times that of our Sun. Aldebaran\'s mass is unknown, but is thought to be similar to our Sun\'s. Consequently, its extended outer atmosphere gives us a preview of the ultimate fate of our star in another 4 to 5 billion years as it ends its hydrogen fusion phase on its way to becoming a planetary nebula surrounding a white dwarf star. Aldebaran lies about 65 light years distant, well in front of the much farther Hyades Star Cluster. It is the 13th brightest star in our night sky.
