The stars within this cluster are all below the visual limit for naked eye viewing, having magnitudes in the range of 9 - 12. Binoculars or a small telescope are required to view this open cluster. The cluster is located appoximately 1800 light years distant. (Clicking on the image above will open another browser window with a higher resolution version of these images.)

NGC 1746 is another loose and irregular open cluster containing over 75 stars of magnitudes 9 - 12 with a couple of 8\'s thrown in for good measure. Within the boundary of this cluster are two more smaller open clusters with their own NGC designations - 1750 and 1758. These two clusters each contain about 30 - 35 stars in obviously tighter groupings. Interestingly, NGC 1746 it appears, may not be a true cluster after all. Recent photometric and proper motion studies of the stars within these clusters indicate that the two smaller members are true cluster associations at distances of approximately 1663 light years (NGC 1750) and 2218 light years (NGC 1758). The results of the studies also indicate that the stars generally associated with NGC 1746 in fact do not form a physical association.',
