The name (actually "al nath") comes from the Arabic and means "butting one". It is the second brightest star in Taurus, behind Alpha Tauri - Aldebaran. Elnath is one of the few stars that shares another constellation: it is also simultaneously known as Gamma Auigae, being the second brightest star in the constellation Auriga behind first magnitude Capella.

Elnath ranks as the 25th brightest star in the sky and is a blue giant star of spectral class B7. Elnath resides about 130 light years distant and interestingly, from our viewpoint, it lies almost directly opposite the center of our Milky Way galaxy. It is about four and one-half times the size of our Sun and shines about 700 times more brightly. It is an aging star, very near if not at the end of its hydrogen fusion phase. Spectroscopic analysis indicates that it is already beginning to shed its outer atmosphere.
