The precise date of the explosion is well known because Chinese astronomers accurately recorded the "guest star\'s" appearance on that date as well as its exact location in the sky. There is also evidence, albeit inconlusive, that the Anasazi Indians (in present-day Arizona and New Mexico) witnessed the supernova and recorded it graphically in form of petroglyphs painted on rock walls.<br><br>Even though the nebula lies some 6300 light years distant, the star\'s explosion was so powerful that its brilliant light was visible in the daytime for 23 days and it blazed at night with a brightness four times that of the planet Venus. It remained visible at night for nearly two years, finally fading from view 653 days after it first appeared.<br><br>The image above was produced by the FORS2 imager attached to the European Southern Observatory\'s 8.2 meter Very Large Telescope located at Paranal, Chili.
